Amelia Island, Fla., April 15, 2010 - Osprey Village was recently recognized for its compliance with SilverChair, an internal training program which provides employees with on-the-job education, helping them improve quality of care and safety for Osprey Village members. The community is currently more than 90 percent compliant with its training and the benefits are obvious.
Recently, community employees were able to prevent a resident elopement thanks to their SilverChair training. Maintenance Technician Bobby Morrison was filling the community's fountain one morning when he saw a resident leave the building, carrying her purse. He completed his work and drove his cart toward the community's Wellness Center. As he drove, he spotted the resident walking by. Once he arrived at the Wellness Center, he saw fellow Maintenance Technician Dave Edwards watching the resident head toward the entrance gate of the community and attempt to turn on to a local road.
It was then that a "light turned on for Bobby and Dave as they realized that the resident was eloping," said Stace Escott, Osprey Village's Director of Facility Services. Dave called Claire Heikkinen, Osprey Village's Director of Nursing, to advise her of the resident's possible elopement, and she asked them to please bring the resident back.
Dave and Bobby drove their carts toward the gate, with Dave pulling up behind the resident and Bobby pulling in front of her. Dave asked the resident, "Where are you going?" and she responded that she was going to a meeting. Bobby told her he knew where her meeting was and escorted her onto his cart, put his arm around her, smiled, and told her he would be happy to drive her to the meeting. As he approached the facility the resident wondered aloud if they would let her in without an appointment. Bobby replied that he had connections and could get her in, which he did.
"Bobby and Dave said they put their Silverchair training into action when bringing the resident back," Stace said. "Their quick thinking, along with Bobby's charm and Claire's decisiveness, helped the resident return home safely without incident."
