Amelia Island, Fla., March 4, 2009 - George Lannon, Dining Room Manager at Osprey Village, a master-planned, full-service retirement community in Amelia Island, Florida reacted quickly and saved a resident's life last month.
At around 6:45 on January 5th, Lannon performed CRP on resident, Mildred Harris, when she began to choke on a piece of steak. Mr. Lannon has been an employee of Osprey Village since 2006. Mrs. Harris's life has been forever changed by the quick life-saving response of George Lannon.
The evening began like any other until one of the servers motioned George Lannon over to one of the tables. Resident, Mildred Harris was standing up at her table. She was choking on a piece of steak. Her husband tried to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her, but was unsuccessful. Lannon attempted the Heimlich as well without any success, when Mrs. Harris collapsed in his arms. The color in her face went blue as Lannon laid her on the floor. George Lannon then proceeded with chest compressions and CPR.
Lannon states, "Her husband looked so scared. I was scared, but I've been trained to do all of this. I just went through the procedures in my head."
After the second set of chest compressions, Mrs. Harris' color returned to her face. The steak was dislodged from Mrs. Harris, and rescue units were called. "I told her to stay calm," says Lannon. "I didn't want her to experience anymore trauma."
